Web Design Trends

Each year brings fresh trends and technologies that shape the digital landscape. We take a look at trends that dominated 2024, and predict what will pave the way for 2025.

Dark Mode Dominance

The year 2024 saw widespread implementation of dark palettes in websites and applications, and more notably, an increase in the introduction of dark mode options where users can choose light or dark mode. There are a few reasons that explain the prevalence of this web design trend.

  1. Increased Screen Time – using dark mode helps to reduce glare, enabling users to increase their screen time while avoiding eye fatigue. Users are also more aware of blue light exposure from bright screens which can disrupt circadian rhythms by suppressing melatonin production. Dark mode can mitigate this effect and promote better sleep patterns.
  2. Aesthetic Appeal – dark mode provides a sleek, modern look that many users find visually appealing, offering a sense of sophistication and luxury compared to the traditional lighter backgrounds.
  3. Environmental Awareness – there is a general belief that dark mode conserves battery on OLED screens. Despite the impact of this varying across devices, the increasing message to become more environmentally aware and adopt more sustainable practises has reinforced its adoption.

Minimalism with a Twist

Minimalism continued to grow in popularity in 2024, with designers introducing bold typography, vibrant colours, and unique elements to add personality. The rise in minimalism is likely to continue due to its numerous benefits.

For users, their overall experience is enhanced through being able to focus more highly on the content in front of them without added distractions. Since evidence shows that over a third of internet users will disengage from a website if they feel the content or layout is unattractive, it is of growing paramount to consider the user experience. It has also been well established that users will leave a website that takes too long to load (too long being over 3 seconds). Here, the minimalist trend directly helps tackle this problem since simpler designs typically require fewer resources, leading to faster load times.

The added twists that are making appearances in minimalist web design are helping designs stand out while maintaining a high level of clarity and user satisfaction. The use of expressive and bold typography enhances readability and grabs attention, improving user satisfaction and retention rates. There are also many external factors that have made this style of typography so appealing to users. Print media and advertising has long used bold typography, and the rise in content driven apps such as Instagram have popularised aesthetics that include bold and expressive text elements.

With web design being linked ever more closely to a company’s perceived credibility, it makes for an interesting design challenge to appeal to user expectation (thereby improving the user experience) while still creating elements of surprise and delight.

Micro-Interactions and Animations

Small, interactive animations that respond to user actions became a staple in 2024. These include buttons changing colour on hover or checkmarks appearing when a form is correctly filled. Providing this form of immediate feedback is another move towards recognising the importance of user experience as it makes the user feel in control and engaged with the content.

In a world saturated with digital content, animations help capture and hold attention by adding dynamic elements that are more likely to engage users than static designs. Well-designed animations can guide the user through tasks, reducing cognitive load by making the interface more intuitive and responsive. But on a more emotional level, animations can add a layer of delight, making the experience more enjoyable.

Similar to the mechanics used in games to maintain user engagement, the slight anticipation and satisfaction of these interaction makes them feel more rewarding to the user.

Accessibility and Inclusivity Focus

The emphasis on accessibility arguably started with the significant increase in responsive web design, with 90% of websites implementing responsive design to cater to various devices and a broader audience. Technological advancements in web tools and frameworks has also made it easier to implement accessibility features, reducing barriers for designers and developers alike.

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on inclusivity and equal access to digital content. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) are continually updated to introduce more rigorous standards for accessibility. This has led to more web designers and developers following best practices to ensure websites are accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. Implementing features like screen reader compatibility, alternative text for images, and keyboard navigability ensures that websites are usable by everyone, including those with visual, auditory, or motor impairments.

If companies have not already shifted their focus to accessibility and inclusivity in their digital content, they better do so soon. As the world population ages, the prevalence of disabilities will continue to increase, driving the need for accessible digital experiences.

Predictions for 2025 – Technology Drives User-Centric Design

AI-Driven Personalisation

2025 could see a surge in AI-driven personalisation, with websites tailoring content and experiences to individual users based on their behaviour, preferences, and past interactions.

As AI technology becomes more advanced and accessible, businesses now have the opportunity to offer highly personalised user experiences, with the goal of increasing engagement, retention, and customer satisfaction. Users are getting more used to seeing personalised content, through social media platforms, sites such as Amazon, and apps like Netflix. With more advancements in machine learning, the level of personalisation will become more effective and accurate, which in turn will make the user experience feel more relevant and meaningful.

However, challenges such as privacy concerns, algorithm bias, and integration complexity may slow adoption initially. Companies must ensure compliance with privacy regulations like GDPR and address potential biases to maximise the benefits of AI-driven personalisation.

Sustainability-Focused Design

As concerns about climate change and environmental sustainability grow, both consumers and businesses are looking for ways to reduce their impact. Sustainability-focused design in web development emphasizes creating digital experiences that minimise environmental impact. This involves optimising websites and digital products for energy efficiency, reducing their carbon footprint, and incorporating eco-friendly practices throughout the design and development process.

Minimalist web design and streamlined development are natural precursors of sustainable design practices. Adopting a minimalist approach not only enhances UX but also reduces the amount of data that needs to be processed and loaded.

The choices web developers make impacts carbon footprint. Using static site generators and content delivery networks (CDNs) cuts processing time and therefore lowers energy consumption. There is also an opportunity for eco-friendly practices through choosing hosting providers committed to sustainability, such as those that use renewable energy or offset their carbon emissions.

Ongoing innovation in green technology and hosting solutions will make sustainability-focused design easier to implement and more effective as we move further into 2025.

Augmented Reality (AR) Integration

While it feels like augmented reality has been a long time coming, 2025 is poised to be a breakthrough year for augmented reality (AR). With more AR-capable devices and improvements in webAR, delivering AR experiences through web browsers is becoming more accessible. The widespread adoption of 5G networks will further enhance the smooth running of complex AR experiences, making AR a valuable tool for creating engaging, interactive content.

From a developers perspective, creating these AR experiences is beginning to become more accessible since the distribution of developer kits such as Apple’s ARKit and Google’s ARCore.

With a distinct increase in demand for immersive experiences in web design, AR provides the perfect solution by providing engaging, interactive content that can substitute or enhance physical interactions.

Voice User Interfaces (VUIs)

The movie ‘Her’ predicted that by 2025 the majority of people would be using an AI based Voice User Interface. VUIs enable users to interact with digital systems through voice commands instead of traditional input methods like keyboards, mice, or touchscreens. Commonly found in voice-activated devices, virtual assistants, they are increasingly being implemented in websites and applications.

With the already widespread adoption of smart speakers, smartphones with voice assistants, users are becoming more comfortable with voice commands. As people become more used to multitasking, this hands-free interaction method will allow them to interact with digital content, enhancing user engagement by catering to different preferences. It also gives scope to a broader audience since voice commands can be quicker and more intuitive than navigating complex interfaces.

VUIs will likely become a standard feature on a wider range of devices and applications, from home automation systems to websites, although it faces the same privacy challenges as AI.

How to Stand Out in 2025

To carve a niche in the crowded digital space of 2025, it’s essential to strike the right balance between following trends and establishing a unique identity.

  1. Leverage Trends – trends like AI-driven personalisation and sustainability-focused design are likely to improve user satisfaction and engagement. Aligning with current trends shows that your brand is relevant and attuned to user expectations.
  2. Defy Trends – going against the grain can make your website memorable. By defying trends, you create a distinct brand voice and style that sets you apart from competitors.
  3. A Balanced Trend Adoption – not every trend will suit your brand. Carefully choose trends that align with your brand values and audience preferences. Adapt trends to fit your unique brand story. For instance, if sustainability is important to your brand, go beyond green hosting by incorporating eco-friendly practices throughout your digital presence.

As we approach 2025, web design will continue to evolve, shaped by technological advancements and changing user expectations. To stand out, businesses must be strategic in their approach, either by effectively integrating emerging design elements or confidently innovating to carve a unique space in the market. By embracing designs that resonate with contemporary tastes while staying true to their brand identity, companies can ensure their digital presence remains engaging and visually appealing to today’s discerning audiences. The key to success lies in understanding these evolving preferences and adapting creatively to the dynamic digital landscape.
